THEM

Reykjavík Fringe Festival

Four women from Spindrift Theatre observe different sides of masculinity in this devised physical theatre performance which is all at once thought provoking and emotional, tragic and hilarious.

THEM explores toxic masculinity and how it affects everyone in society. THEM focuses on how toxic masculinity imprisons our experience of gender and narrows our horizons. It observes how toxic masculinity shapes gender roles and makes people behave against their morals or better knowledge. THEM brings light on taboos connected to masculinity and demands respect for feminine qualities.

THEM is based on over 40 interviews with men from different backgrounds conducted since 2016. The interviewees come from Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, UK, USA, Australia, Chile and France. They discuss their relationship to their gender and biological sex, their childhood and role models, their emotional life and dreams, their sexuality and fears. The performance also includes material written and devised by the actresses, discussing their encounters with toxic masculinity.

The performance has been developed in residencies over the past 5 years. Work-in-progress performance took place in Höfn í Hornafirði in East Iceland and in Helsinki in 2017, as well as in Reykjavik in 2020. In Reykjavík it won the Nordic Fringe Network Award in 2020 at the Reykjavík Fringe Festival with a Covid-friendly filmed version, allowing the final performance to partake in any of the Nordic Fringe Festivals when ready.

The final version of THEM will be performed at Reykjavik and Stockholm Fringe Festivals in July and September 2022 as well as at Jackson’s Lane Theatre in London in April 2022.

The performance is in English and is 60 minutes long.
